RDFL 1971 to 2006
March 1971
The present Roscommon and District League was formed with its first Annual General Meeting held in Harlow’s Hotel Roscommon. The first League Championship matches kicked off in April 1971 with ten teams taking part. John Kenna from Cornafulla was the first Treasurer.
The teams were Boyle Celtic, Castlerea Celtic, Clonown-Cornafulla, Lanesborough, Mosaic Utd.
Old Castle Utd (Baylough Athlone) Roscommon Town, Skyvalley Rovers and Southern Wanders
(Roscommon Strokestown Utd.)
At the initial start up there were no qualified referees about and indeed the standard of refereeing at some of the first games left a lotto be desired. The scarcity of telephones was another problem and any member of a Club who had access to a telephone was sure to be elected Secretary. All the initial clubs had to secure a playing pitch a rather short notice but in this department most clubs did secure a pitch for the opening matches in the League.
Transport to matches was another problem as very few of the players were fortunate to own a car at that time. The first committee deserve great credit for getting the league off the ground and given the lack of experience and facilities the League was very well run and was a huge success.
1975
The Club was founded in 1975 with Michael Grenham the first Chairman and Ballaghaderreen man Pat Higgins their first secretary. Martin Creavin was first treasurer of the Club.Their first game was against Skyvalley Rovers and their first Competitive game was in the Challenge Cup against Loughglinn / Tarmon in January 1976.
The team to take the field on that January day was Pat Higgins, John Kenny, Johnny Murray, Martin Creavin, Pat Mulvey, Sean Finn,Tommy Kelly, Jimmy Mc.Manus, Brendan Murray, Mick Mulvey, Gerry Carthy, Dominic Flynn, and Thomas Nolan. Since its formation Moore Utd have always been a very competitive and well-organised Club. While they have had success over the years with a little bit of luck they would have many more trophies it the glass case.
Over the years they have had a nice blend of talented players and dedicated workers such asJohnny Murray, John Griffin, Dermott Dunican, Jimmy Greene, Jason Scully, Ta Duignan, Thomas Carthy, Paul and Gerry Kelly, Pat Moynihan, Packie McManus, David Kenny, Mike Burns, Mattie Duffy, Michael Kelly, Padraig Glynn, Gerry Kelly and Maureen Griffin and many more.
